In the middle

Have you ever been in a situation that had nothing or very little to do with you, but it affects you very closely? You try to be the voice of reason or peacemaker and yet you end up feeling hurt or in the middle. This is how I feel. It is a situation or pivotal time for me right now as I do my very best to focus on what my goals are personally and professionally. But I keep hitting these road blocks or detours. How did I become the scapegoat? It sucks because I do not want to be the excuse as to why individuals are trying to fake it for me. It's a hard discussion to full out disclose and though I have shared this personal present with some I still don't like even bringing it up. It just brings up so many hurtful feelings and it messes up my focus, throwing me off what is priority.

As I type this I feel anxious, disoriented and just blah. I woke up feeling pretty good, maybe somewhat tired but otherwise good. I am the type of person that even the slightest sign of negativity on someone else's end can bring down my mood almost instantly. Today I tried really hard to ignore said negativity and get back to the good mood I was in, but I couldn't block it and I was immediately upset and angry. And now I am trying to pick myself back up.

I prayed for about five minutes not long ago and I asked the Lord for many things but I prayed for the people around me. I prayed for their own strength, their humility, their possible need for forgiveness for their actions, and while I cannot cleanse someone else from their faults I felt the urge to pray for their mishaps. I know in my heart that this situation and impending decision is not my doing, I did not cause the friction. However, it is hurtful that I feel in the middle of this nonsense.

And so, for my own sanity and need to clear this current burning sensation of anxiety surrounding my chest I think that I need to move out of my home more swiftly than planned. No, I do not have the funds to do so but how else can I take that chance I need for ME to experience life as an adult, doing my own thing, exploring a new beginning without apology? In my eyes it is the ONLY way for everyone to be happy, not “sticking around” or attempting to “keep the peace” on my behalf. I cannot take the pressure and angst any longer.

I am ready to run, fly, on my own. I am desperately wanting to get enough cash to get me started, rent a room, and just BE. I am hopeful the restaurant job I went on an interview for is still available so that I have a job lined up. The manager wanted to hire me then back in April of this year but he was not certain of my capability to commute from a long distance away. Prayerfully my circumstances change and I can take on the challenge and new start in a new city.

As this blog surrounds the importance of health it is imperative that I reiterate that mentally one's well being IS serious. It is how we all function and deal with every day life. If I am sitting around down and out or constantly worrying about the “status” of a played out occurrence, how can I cope with it if I don't address it? Especially since I am confronted with it almost daily by those closest to me. I NEED my sanity, I WANT my undeniable happiness.

I no longer want to be in the middle. So I can't think of a better time to untie myself from the same and place myself in front, because I deserve it.

Dear summer....

Dear summer,

I have not typed nor have I written many words these last few weeks. Somehow my brain seems locked down, on pause, and unable to really sit down and fuse my thoughts together. Jumbled slightly, and almost feeling like I have nothing to write about. Well, maybe that isn't all the way true because writing is what drives me, it is my outlet to express myself when I cannot verbally say what's going on inside. The summertime sweat of a job that seems vacant, home life that needs a fresh coat of paint, a summer love not quite in site, I haven't given myself the space and time to achieve some goals. Granted I have been coming home after 7pm these last few weeks so the main thing on my mind is rest.

Once home when I thought I would work on a task I'd end up pushing it in the back of my brain, then forgetting the next day or having the same attitude, “I'll do it tomorrow.” But summer as August has crept in already I am aware how time is crucial and that I cannot delay on certain goals. True the biggest goal/dream of all getting a full time job that I will no doubt love, WITH benefits, vacation days, the whole deal. However I cannot predict when that hiring opportunity will come (praying soon), but I can at the very least be proactive.

It has been a struggle with how my emotions are like the rollercoaster I will no longer ride at amusement parks, up then down, spiraling, coasting, speeding up. And with you almost gone summer I envy how much more fun I wanted to have basking in the glory of your steamy air, being carefree and being delighted in my adventures. Truth, you are not yet over so the coulda, woulda I cannot begin to partake in.

There are goals and dreams I know can be reality and sometimes the smallest things I turn into a project. I just thought of how I think of the items I want to achieve as a “list” or “tasks.” It sounds so generic and cliché, and yes it is what it is but I keep thinking that the labeling of these items is so standard and not fun. Perhaps I am thinking of it too hard or maybe I need to think of these lists as something else? Not sure but I guess the main thing is to just stick to a plan and get er done!

I CANNOT sit back anymore and waste time. I know I get tired easily from the headache of job searching but I do have a lot of positive goals that I need to keep working towards like my book of poetry, my writing in general, and my support group Blossom. These are things that mean a lot to me. But as I said, somewhere summer I stumbled, I got stuck, fearful, tired, and simply didn't give myself the time, energy, or space to work on what could be going right.

As my neck is still a bit stiff from a muscle strain somehow from last night while sleeping, all I want to do is lay down and count some sheep. Just sitting up right now is a little annoying with some pain but I need to get some things accomplished. The main thing is to not be upset if one or two things don't get done. I am beginning again to start somewhere, right here, and I can't stop.

Thanks for listening summer. From my heart to yours....

Fruit Cleanse

Summer has arrived and I am feeling the heat in many areas of my life. But before I delve into all of what's on my mind I want to focus on one of the things I would like to explore: A cleansing of my body, the inside. Whether to think about it literally or figuratively I am in need of it. After having a conversation with a co-worker of mine about a water involved cleanse she was doing I felt the inspiration to give it a try. Now I know some of you have heard different things when it comes to people doing a cleanse of whether it's the juicing detox or a full-blown no food just water and other ingredients. Though on my end I am not looking to "detox" per se or diet, I am looking to feel good and well-nourished.

My co-worker explained her reasons of the cleanse and that she was not trying out a diet, still eating what she wants just being smarter and more health conscious. I feel that I have been a lot better in that regard as I am eating more fruits and veggies, even though now with the warmer air my bananas (my favorite) turn brown too fast! So with the convo with my co-worker I thought I'd try out a fruit cleanse, still of course eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But I will incorporate the drinking of the chilled water in a jug throughout the day, especially if I am out and about.

Per my co-worker and other advice I came across online the fruit cleanse or with other items of your choice (mint, cucumber etc.) it is quite easy to prepare. First:

-Use a clean jar or jug of your choice

-Cut/slice your fruit/vegetable items and place into jar/jug (add one thing with another like lemon & lime, lemon & mint, just strawberries, oranges & lemon, just watermelon, whatever you like!)

-Fill your jar/jug up with water, let the fruit sit in the water for about 30 minutes before drinking

Voila!

There was only one aspect I didn't get a sense of if one should drink it chilled or just slightly. For myself I would think to have the water nice and chilled. Tomorrow I will try the fruit cleanse using strawberries.

In my research I found this about what various fruits can help with:

-Orange & Lemon water: Citrus fruits help digestion especially in room temp (or warm) water. This water can help heartburn, indigestion, gas, bloating, loss of appetite, vomiting & constipation. -Cucumber, lime & mint (ginger optional): Good water for water-weight management, hydration, cleansing, controlling appetite, improving mood & energy. -Strawberry, orange & mint: protects immune system, vitamin rich, prevents wrinkles. Mint also helps with bad breath and digestion.

Here's to healthy eating AND drinking. From my heart to yours,

27 and more reasons to keep growing

I just turned....ok let me start again. I just turned....TWENTY-SEVEN! Someone older than me might be thinking, "Girl, please." But it is a new age that I haven't quite become accustomed to saying aloud. My birthday was May 1st and it was a lovely day might I add. A day at the spa and dinner with my sister was just what I needed in starting off my odd yet evenly earned new age. It's only been a few weeks so it always takes a minute to remember that you're a year older. I don't usually become obsessed with age but I definitely have paid attention since entering my 20's.

I vividly remember turning 21 and now I am 27, yeah, where did the years go? They've past on of course though gliding into my mid-twenties has really made me feel nostalgic. As I currently live in my parents home I have lately thought about my being just 14 when we moved into our house. That's 12 whole years since I've gone through and grown through so many experiences. I know that I have outgrown my room and certain tidbits of old habits but I feel so "almost there" "almost living on my own." It is scary but it is time.

Who wants to really speed up time? Not I. But I still feel ready. If anything I want it to slow down steadily and allow me to smell the beautiful roses that my life has to offer. Even if the roses prick me with their thorns or need constant attention and water, I want to embrace that.

So as I ponder and work towards being more persistent in my daily goals I want to be at a place of stability and comfort. For my own health and dream-filled nature I want to keep growing. To be 27 is a blessing and plenty ammunition to deliver my best, progressing towards the next step.

How does your new or almost new age speak to you?

Winter Blues

Baby, it is cold outside and has been ever since Old Man Winter showed up this season. I could go on and on about the snowstorms of 2014's winter's past and how just about anyone I've spoken to is completely over IT and the cold weather. But I don't want to necessarily complain about how cold it is blah, blah, blah, it's winter I know, it's a given. However this past weekend it was quite lovely, not only were there warmer temps but I just had such a great weekend all the way through. Though there is something that can be said about when it's cold outside and how it can affect someone's mood. I am not saying that just because of warmer air I enjoyed my weekend, but it may have contributed to it, right?

Since the chilling air this winter I have wanted to stay inside and be at home. It is a like a process lately just to go out. First, gather the energy to actually go somewhere, get dressed (warmly), then actually GO outside, start my car, wait for it to heat up, find that I have no gas because I used most of it from turning on the heat inside. A process! But with spring on the way and then summer I am sure most people will find something new to whine about, (allergies, how HOT it is, vacation cut short, crowded beaches, mosquito's, again how HOT it is), and whatever else people complain about during summer. Point being, why are we complaining? Spring, summer, fall, winter, it's the same as last year and the year before that. Of course things change weather wise and whatnot but it's not a complete difference.

I know myself, and I can fall victim and get caught up in the winter blues hoopla. Sometimes with good reason and other times it is because what I am surrounded by. So I want to change the color, my mood my endurance, my happiness, my capabilities into something bright and worth it. It is winter and blue can be a beautiful hue, but it is all how I create it, my choice.

For my own mental well-being I am becoming more in charge of how I express myself and control my healthy mind. Winter is still brewing, but so are my objectives to sound off as my best self.

My Hunger Games

You know that feeling you get when it's time to eat some food, your stomach begins to growl or the hunger pains begin? That's me right about now. Not only could I use a late night snack but I am also hungry for something else, change, positive changes to be exact. I can't help but shake the emotions that when I have been eating food, large meals sometimes, and I still feel hungry after, I begin to feel like it means something more. What bugs me is that I'm not sure if it is all in my head or is my body sending me subliminal messages. I couldn't possibly be hungry for food ALL of the time, so I honestly feel something bigger is happening.

I am so hungry to move on with my life filled with romance, a promising career, and feeling like a better Elishia loving myself unconditionally, not second guessing. The steps sometimes hardened as stone and money woes has made it difficult to keep focused on what I am aiming for.

It is tough to be a champion for your own self when you need an extra supply of cheerleaders along the way. I'm not saying I haven't had any support, I have plenty. Though at times I want an extra boost of someone telling me, "Don't quit, keep going." When other people around me are dealing with their own issues I think it rubs off on me, especially at home. But I want to be better about speaking things into the atmosphere, saying positive phrases and mantras to myself as much as possible everyday. Perhaps I need to be my own cheerleader a bit more.

So this hunger, this hunger stems from too many months of feeling without. Too many bad memories of when things were completely going wrong.

I am hungry to be filled up and full. Full of my own power that I know is within me. Full of joy that naysayers will have to fight hard to try and take from me. I want to be full of positive energy that I carry with me always. Yeah, it ain't gonna be picture perfect. But it doesn't mean it has to be all bad either, I don't want to feel downtrodden. I am not a damsel. In distress? Maybe occasionally. However I'm not looking to be saved. I'm looking to search for my own true self, my talents and dreams and explore them, share them.

Being hungry could be a motivation, shows my determination. To be full, oh I want that so bad.

From my heart to yours,

Your heart to follow

Happy 2014! It's a new year, can you believe it? Well here we are, no turning back but looking forward, that's the attitude to have! At Day 6 of January I am already brewing with a handful of ideas that I want to achieve. This issue that comes about is that there are too many! I'm not saying that they aren't attainable but sometimes I feel like I pile on too much, too fast, and without a concrete plan of action. I'm no perfectionist but I like to have organization, it keeps me balanced. With that being said I still struggle with how to level out and how to approach my many projects, aspirations, and thoughts. I know it's possible!

As I think about the women in my life there seems to be some crossover going on where it isn't just me but also they have their own certain area that seems to be a challenge. And it's ok, none of us are saints let's be real! I want to flesh out these areas and hopefully inspire you. I am not a "fixer" or trained motivator but I think I have some words of encouragement to pass along. Heck, we all need it every so often, right?!

These descriptions/types that I came up with aren't necessarily all of the women that I know. But more of what I've noticed from articles I have read that pinpoint what some women seem to be dealing with. Or, these descriptions are of people that I encounter(ed). I'm not trying to group anyone into a box or category but more so place a name on any emotions or feelings.

Queen of Ideas

I definitely fall under this group without question. The "Queen of Ideas" is just that, she always has a new venture up her dainty sleeves. It is her favorite avenue to walk down and burst with hearty excitement because of how fabulous it sounds. That's cool, but queens sometime need to sit on their idea thrones and just be still for a bit.

Tips: Write down what those ideas are (big & tiny) and really plan how you can finish them. Try spacing those ideas out. Start off small, even if it is as simple as revamping your room or closet by switching things around. Don't fret if everything on your list or plans aren't completed. Breathe, and begin again.

Money Grubber

Yes, of course most people LOVE money but the "Money Grubber" craves it and spends it often, maybe too often. Her challenge is learning how to save her dough without devouring it as fast as she's gotten it. Whether you're the money grubber that works really hard for the money but it burns in your pocket or bank account and you're itching to spend it. Or you're the money grubber that can't tell yourself no, no more swiping that credit card, no more going out to dinner every other day. You struggle with savoring your financial abundance.

Tips: Keep track in a journal of all of your expenses that you have to pay for each month. Whether in your savings account or in your own home put aside "play money" or merely savings inside a jar or wherever you'd like. Prioritize those shopping trips and nights out so that you aren't over spending. And if money isn't really something you've had a lot of lately maybe it's time to try a different path/job. No one likes to be broke!

First Lady

Are you the woman who puts every one's needs before her own? You make sure the people closest to you are alright and just about forget about your own well-being. Maybe you're caring for a family member or you're a single mother that has to do it all. Or a person who's sporting one too many hats. You're drained all of the time and hardly have a free moment of peace by yourself. That's a no go.

Tips: Consider being selfish. Might sound bad but you've GOT to learn how to put yourself first, you deserve to be the first lady and feel sane. True, you might think God is first, or if you're a parent or a Jackie-of-all-trades and there are some things that you feel should be put before you. But you need solace as well and to feel stress-free. If you can get assistance with your child or children, ASK even if you have a spouse/partner. If you feel over-worked maybe ask your boss for a better schedule or take a personal day, vacation/stay-cation, SOMETHING! You can be number one.

Pretty Passive

She's the one where not much stimulates her, never really has a strong reaction to problems or even good things. It's not that the "Pretty Passive" person is dull or un-emotional but she's laid-back and would much rather be low-key as far any participation goes. But being passive sometimes has its turbulent moments where you almost don't care enough about anything. There could be a reason the passive gal acts this way, she may not want to be known as a docile dame but it's become her personality trait somehow.

Tips: If you're dealing with trying to be more energized with every occurrence in your life try to first admit it, then confront it. Discover if being passive is just you (nothing wrong if so), or are you hiding from addressing something else? Create a daily mantra for yourself to help motivate your moods.

Career Connoisseur

Her motto is her own, the phrases pay in her eyes. Whether she's experienced, mid-level or just starting out the "Career Connoisseur" is all about that, her career and not much else. Maybe she adds in her relationship if she's off the market, or time to socialize with friends, and spend some free time (when she has it) with family. However this career woman is consumed by her job and making money matter. It isn't that she doesn't have other hobbies she just loves what she does. It's a beautiful thing of course, especially if she's worked twice as hard to get where she is, she's proud.

Tips: Keep the momentum going, work it girl! But also find the time to slow down and get your rest on. You are your biggest competition, remember that. Don't be hesitant to take on a less challenging task like maybe a yoga class, learning a new recipe, or catching up on your favorite t.v. shows or a movie you haven't watched in a long time. It's ok to settle down and take in the view that you made possible for yourself.

Which description somewhat fits you? Or perhaps it is a little bit of all mentioned. As I said before none of these types/descriptions are to define anyone, simply to open ourselves to how we can be better and glistening in positive changes. You are on your own path, follow it. It is your heart to follow.

From my heart to yours,

*Lish

Let there be light

So here we are, the end of a year that will be known as last year in 2013. But for me known as: THE STRANGEST, HEARTWRENCHING, HAPPY, PROUD, SCARY, HUNGRY, UNSURE about everything year. I honestly have no clue where the months went, I can clearly feel myself in early January watching the ball drop with my parents and saying, "Yes 2013 is MY year!" But don't we all say that? Not that it can't be true but I began my year of 2013 so full of hope and drive that I never felt before. But just days after singing "Auld Lang Syne" I caught a horrible virus which led me to take about three different trips to the E.R., experiencing dehydration, crowded emergency rooms, visits to my primary doctor, a cardiologist, endocrinologist, therapist and then a gastro doctor, all to see what the heck was going on with me, and that was all in the month of January. I started to experience heart palpitations, anxiety and just weird thoughts like I was going to die, all of these fears came about after that virus. I had never experienced anything like it before and it terrified me. It got to the point where some nights I would sleep in the bed with my mom or she in my bed because I kept feeling so afraid and panicky about everything. I didn't want to be alone. I didn't feel like me, Elishia anymore.

After a number of doctor visits many came to the conclusion that I was fine and maybe the virus just threw some things in my body out of whack. Though I did start to experience heartburn right after the virus, again something I hadn't experienced before and it led me to think something was going on with my heart or something else was wrong! Finally after one more trip fast forwarding to April the gastro doctor decided/diagnosed me with GERD which essentially is dealing with acid reflux. It took me some time to have that settle in, I kept thinking, "How could I have that? I've never really had heartburn before?" And then there was the hunger, I would eat food (lots of food) and feel very hungry shortly after. The doctor didn't really have an answer for that. But he seemed certain about the GERD. Frankly I think it may all be in my head. But I have rolled with the GERD punches and take the medicine as prescribed. So 2013 began rough, the road of some gridlock, some jams, detours, I was all over the place.

But there were some major highlights:

From August 2012-April 2013 I diligently worked on and completed my 80 paged Master's thesis project!

Drove in May from Philly to Ohio and back for the first time to pick up my Grams who came to visit

In May 2013 I turned 26, presented my thesis, graduated with my degree

During the summer I spontaneously drove to Brooklyn/Coney Island New York for a day trip with my closest friend of 8 years, we had a blast

Alone I read some of my poetry at a spoken word night, just cause I felt like it

Went on two dates with two TOTALLY different guys, very interesting guys but nothing came of it (eh, plenty mo fish in the sea!)

Attended many job fairs and even some interviews this year

I was a book club instructor/lead counselor for girls ages 10-14 this summer at a camp

I have been freelance writing for one full year

My cousin Maggie got engaged then delivered her first child Felicity November 16th

My sister got proposed to this December, the 20th

After much procrastination I rearranged/cleaned out my closet, it's almost color coordinated :-)

Despite a decreased income I have been able to pay my bills and more importantly my car loan & insurance

Though my health insurance was cut shortly after, I made it to the dentist, no cavities!

To my surprise I got hired they day of my interview for a part-time job at a museum

My family's dynamic has been through changes but my parents have managed to keep the peace

Through many hurdles I can see and taste my goals career and personal coming to fruition

I am here, alive, able...

I admit I came too close to giving up, not on my life but just from trying to make the bigger goals happen. I had been feeling like maybe I wasn't ready for ALL that I want to accomplish. But that isn't true, I have never been more ready and able to accomplish the goals big and small that I set out for myself. It has been hard to sit in one place and really dissect what I should be doing and planning. I haven't given myself enough room and space to really say:

"You know what you got it, you CAN succeed. Forget who told you in the past that you couldn't. You've made things happen for yourself, you HAVE achieved so much and there is more to come."

There hasn't been a better time for me to give myself the room to grow, the room to believe in every little marble of my abilities. I was so caught up on what the last person said, or the last email rejection told me, this that and more. I have let setbacks and temporary happenings become a downfall, and that shouldn't be. But yesterday there was light on a shiny sun-filled morning in route to work I decided to play a little gospel music, something serene and comforting. I became so emotional by the words that I started to cry. Instead of stopping myself I let the tears fall, I closed my eyes and I thanked God for my life, I tapped my feet to the beat of the singer's voice and the words really spoke to me. I dabbed my face with an available tissue in my pocket and let the release happen, whether or not someone saw me I did not care. I needed to cry. I don't think I have ever stated that, but I did. And I didn't necessarily wake up angry but there was a weight on my shoulders and I needed it off.

I'm sure there is more releasing of emotions that I need to get out but yesterday I was content that I allowed myself to cry, to feel, to understand that it is ok to feel worry and strain but that I don't need to led it consume me. Yeah, I only have $11 bucks in my checking account and about $10 in my wallet, but with that I am rich in knowing that it ain't permanent. I am rich in believing that there is light after every tunnel, and I can see it, the fresh start, the big and small dreams coming true.

Light,

bright

beaming,

then there's me

shining.

Stress-bumps...in the road

Whenever I get a bump on my face I immediately think that I am not drinking enough water. But then there are times when I think there has to be some other reason why the bumps appear. It can be very random where all of a sudden I have a bump on my chin or somewhere on my forehead or along the side (or both sides) of my face. I never pay attention to when the bumps come for me to attribute the break-out to a particular "thing," i.e. my period, too much salt or sugar, not enough water etc. As I poked and occasionally prodded at the acne I stopped to think, "Is it stress?"

As a teenager I rarely saw pimples appear on my face, it would happen here and there. I recall my first official meeting with acne at 12 years old while getting ready for school one day and a strange brownish-red dot began to surface on my nose. I remember staring in the mirror in horror afraid that the entire 7th grade would notice. From then on I would on occasion scrub my face with an acne wash that frequently flashed across my television screen as a girl splashed clear water on her face and scrubbed. Her face looked clear and I believed mine would too. But I didn't keep up with the routine since the pimples would appear at random, most times when I had to show my face in public, just my luck! As I grew up and now into my new adult life this continued, pimple one day, then again whenever it decided to happen, never anything constant. Though lately the break-outs are performing for more than one show, I didn't buy a ticket and I'm not feeling it. But maybe that's it, because my life has been a strange puzzle, slowly trying to piece everything together sometimes leads me to not "feel" certain situations, which causes me to stress.

I decided to look further into this to see if maybe this every now and again acne was like before, or if some stresses around and within me is having an affect on my skin. With some research I realize how stress affects various parts of our bodies, from your face, your mood, maybe a headache here and there or possibly feeling tense. I've experienced many of those feelings/changes and I am beginning to pay attention. I am not saying that the second you get a pimple you are stressed, not at all. But, if a break-out happens more frequently maybe there's something to look in to. For me, this is the case. Though on the surface any bump I get doesn't look TOO bad, but sometimes they hurt or are in inconvenient places. Being embarrassed by them doesn't help anything.

Today I have two bumps, Mr. Chin and Mr. Fore, I am sure you get the gist why. However they made their debut a few days ago so now they are just about fading away. For Mr. Chin and Mr. Fore I haven't done anything but washed my face with an apricot scrub that I have because I am noticing that my skin is more oily than usual. So you have to discover what will work for you, ponder if your skin is acting up a bit too much and consider why it's happening. Like the new and strangeness of my life right now these stress-bumps...in the road are just that, bumps, hiccups, whatever you want to call it. Not permanent.

Consider these tips from WebMDhttp://www.webmd.com/beauty/skin/the-effects-of-stress-on-your-skin

8 Ways to Reduce the Effects of Stress on Your Skin

Although it's impossible to avoid stress completely, there are ways to handle it better. Try these approaches:
  1. Don't neglect your skin. Take care of your skin, even if you're tired or stressed.
  2. Get regular exercise. It's good for your skin and the rest of your body.
  3. Take time for yourself to do something you enjoy, even if you only have ten minutes. Take a bath or read an article.
  4. Take a walk around the block.
  5. Practice stress management techniques, such as breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, or visual imagery.
  6. Get enough sleep. Seven to eight hours each night is ideal.
  7. Say no. It's OK to set limits and boundaries to lower your stress.
  8. Talk to someone. Seek support from a friend or a professional therapist.

Digital Detox

For the next week I am going to reboot and jump start my mental well-being. I realized that as of late I allow social media to consume my life a little too much. It's weird, there was a time where only Facebook was the hottest thing smoking in college. Then Myspace caught on, YouTube, Twitter, now Instagram and a host of others are everywhere, free to download and devour. But I need a digital detox, bad. There are some days I admit where I can tune out the alerts or the urge to unlock my phone and go social media crazy. Then there are other days where I am too involved with generally someone else's life through pics, tweets and status updates. It begins to be technology overload!

Truth, no one is forcing me to go surfing on these sites and apps but it can be so addictive. And trust, there really is an app for just about everything under the sun. More and more especially in today's world social media is at the helm of publicizing businesses, a book you wrote, a job posting plus more. I too have utilized the internet and social media as a means to promote my writing by sharing with friends and family. Sometimes there really is no way around it, this is the signs of the techy times! But I am challenging myself to limit my involvement with the occasional maddening mayhem of repeated notifications, double-tapping, commenting and "liking" stuff. I get caught up in the charade of it all, sometimes monitoring my posts and somehow cyber gawking the pages and photos of people I don't even know! It gets like that.

My plan thus far is to only check my emails, job search, get some writing done and tackle anything else that doesn't involve picking up my phone or logging in to a social media site. Hmm, does blogging count? Ugh! Who knows, but writing is an outlet for me so, not sure what to say, :-/. Though I think the limiting of time spent or none at all on apps and such will do me good. I've got books I need to start and finish, naps to take, shows to watch on Netflix (like Scandal), and maybe do a word search or something. This may not be a full blown no technology detox (lets get real) but it is a start to a healthier mindset that isn't fixated on social media. A no technology detox would mean no television, phone or internet activity! I am sure I could try that out, but for now digitally detoxing.

I will "share" this on Facebook and "tweet" on Twitter, but only to possibly encourage someone else to take a step forward in stepping back from media madness. For a couple of days. :-)

Different Drum

Today I had my session with my behavioral therapist, we hadn't met in 6 weeks so there was lots to catch up on. Before graduating from graduate school in May we had a session and scheduled in to meet in another two weeks but upon the doctor cancelling that session and another two weeks of waiting to plan another meeting time went on, but we're back on and that's the great thing! So our 30 minutes of time together today went well. I basically filled the doctor in on all that has been happening with me since we last met, some of the highlights then some of the not so glamorous moments. But by the end of the session she had noted my progression and that I seem happier. Music to my at one point muted ears but I heard her clearly and I believe it too.

It can be strange sometimes, who knows why, that when things in your life begin to go well or what used to bother you doesn't really anymore you may begin to question the positive change. As if there is a hesitancy in accepting the change even when it is something wonderful. It's not that I question my emerging happiness but I am learning to understand it and realize that I have earned it and there should be no caution to the improved change. There has been a slight hurdle that had been bothering me for quite some time with my father and our distanced relationship. And though words have been exchanged and my feelings expressed I still almost feel a bit leery about it, I want my emotions to be taken seriously and not be in vain. But in all bumps on any road I am on I remain alert about it but I try to not let them haunt me.

As I type these words I am listening to one of my favorite singers, Celine Dion and her powerful voice serenading my ears with "My Heart Will Go On." Odd (or is it) that this is playing as I think about all of the heartache I went through in the last year, being let go from my job, questioning my own capabilities, figuring out the meaning of friendship and love among family and opening my heart to someone new who comes along. Yes, the heart can go on, it can heal, grow stronger, beat to a new and changed drum. So while my life isn't fully "pieced" together, I most certainly am not the same young woman I was last year, 5 months ago, 4 weeks ago or even yesterday. I am still me but continuing my own walk, only looking back to see my footprints and how far I have come.

Funny Money

I sit here in bed pondering about money. Not having much of it, needing more of it, wanting to earn it, reluctant to spend it, money has been driving me crazy. There are so many phrases to describe money whether its "money makes the world go round," "the more money you make, the more problems you see," "show me the money," the phrases can go on. But I wasn't always worried like this.

There was a time when I had a full-time job and I didn't sweat how much money I had in my account or how much my bills were. I just paid what I needed to and tried to spend wisely. Today, I find myself inching out money down to my last few pennies, happily enlightened if I find a few bucks in my wallet. But what bugs me is how things got this way. Granted I am not fully employed right now so the money train has been slowed and makes very few stops at my favorite malls and extra-curricular places. So my funds aren't flowing as they used to be. I hold on and continue prayer that this lack of money times two shall pass.

There are some days where I forget how much money I DON'T have and I'll pretend to live lavishly. That demeanor shifts soon when I check my bank account on my phone, I have an app for that (mistake or no?), constantly checking what's been withdrawn and patiently awaiting my " compensation funds" to deposit.

I don't like to talk too lengthy about money with people I know or attempt to borrow any. Though I've been privy to give, I don't often lean towards IOU's. Especially with family, things get itchy, and not the itch some claim to get when they feel money is "coming" to them. It's the awkward itchy feeling you get when you either owe a family member or you have to resort to borrowing. It isn't fun.

And believe it or not the act, desire and craving more money or simply obtaining it can be a stressor. Stressed over money isn't healthy, ever. But in all fairness, the economy, lack of jobs, blah, blah, blah, the hunt to make and earn money becomes slimmer year after year. Granted those who are doing well for themselves and have a handle on their finances have no complaints, kudos. But when you're living paycheck to paycheck or have paid yet another set of bills for the month leaving you with a few dimes to rub together, money gets funny.

The interesting part about that saying "money is funny," I'm not laughing. But day by day I try not to take an occasional slump to heart and get too serious and emotional about it. "You're gonna get it all back" my mother frequently informs me. But as I write this I'm beginning to think she doesn't necessarily mean money.

Maybe it's the small wins and victories she's referring to. The positive blessings I will gain, that's what's coming. And that's not a bad thing. To be rich doesn't have to equal having money.

Beauty Sleep and Bedtime Behaviors

Some nights, I feel like I am on a good bedtime schedule then I slack off and go to bed entirely too late. But if I am not tired yet, should I just force myself to lay down or...? I call myself getting "settled" and at least be in my bed comfortable, usually watching a little television, but that doesn't always happen. I'll wait until my eyes are extremely heavy before I actually "call it a night." Though I wonder, what is one to do when your bedtime routine is jumbled, leaving no room to actually count sheep and allow yourself to get rested?

Granted, the television is a distraction and being on the phone texting, web surfing and what have you, but for some it helps them ease into sleep. Though I will say the last two weeks I have been turning my TV off before bed and putting sleep music on, there's an app called "Sleep Bug." You can select a variety of sounds like the beach, classical, zen, weather sounds etc and even set a timer so that it doesn't play all night. And this has helped me. I find myself more calm as I drift off to sleep.

There are so many studies out they say we should all get at least 8 hours of sleep if I am not mistaken. For the most part I think I get that, but only because most days I get up during different times. I am usually awake by 8 or 9am. But in going to bed at midnight or close to 2 am, I would only be getting roughly 6 or 7 hours. With me currently unemployed, my former steady routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time has shifted. I never like to sleep in too late because I like to keep busy during the day, that's not the issue, it's catching enough Z's!

Now some people might be thinking, "You're not working right now, what does it matter?" or "I wish I could stay up a little longer or sleep in a little later, you've got it easy!" That may be true, I think I do put a lot of pressure on myself to keep active and going to bed at a decent hour, and while this isn't a bad regimen to keep up, I guess I could relax a bit. But nevertheless, getting a good amount of sleep is essential for everyone! It doesn't matter if a person is employed or not. They don't call it "beauty rest" for nothing. Our sleep habits affect us during the day. If you're burnt out from the night before and not getting as much sleep as you could, you may be crabby and not too upbeat during your day. We should all be waking up happy for many reasons (your life) and ready to take on the day, but moreover, sleeping well makes us feel and do better. We are better at our jobs, happier, more filled with ideas and of course energized!

So if you're like me and tired of being tired and of saying it all of the time, let's renew ourselves and get some rest! I don't know about you, but I like a nice beauty sleep-filled night as much as the next person :-). Have a GOOD night.

A Burning Heart

Abstract tree of love, hearts and birds Stock Photo - 9580672Here, today, I am eager to explore more of myself. When the new year of 2013 arrived I felt powerful, and energized. I did not make any resolutions just mental notes on improvement and how I could better tackle the year ahead. But just three days into the new age of 2013 I caught a monstrous virus. It was quite scary because it led me to take two trips to the emergency room, complaints of nausea, palpitations of my heart and then a burning sensation that scared me to pieces. As I began to get over the virus I was still slightly "sick" about something. I felt like I had this deep dark secret to reveal but didn't know how to speak it out loud.

What troubled me was in the midst of getting the unwanted virus out of my system I was flooded with so many emotions. I sincerely thought something was "wrong" with me for I could not pinpoint what exactly was going on with me. I referred to various health sites for answers of what was happening, checking the symptoms of different illnesses and thinking, "Is this what I have?" The virus threw so much out of wack for me, it was frightening. Living at home with my parents led me to be freakishly attached to my mom. I always like to be around her but this time, upon getting sick and even after, I wanted her to be near me practically at all times. It got to the point where I wanted her to sleep in my bed or just sit by me in a chair and comfort me.

Her presence as well as my father's made me feel safe. Curiosity of this foreign illness continued and I was starting to feel paranoid, panic, and pressure from my own brain. The mind is definitely a powerful being. I kept thinking about death, time moving on too quickly for me to hop on and grasp it, feeling alone sometimes even with people around me. Soft everyday sounds appeared boisterous, driving in my own car I prayed I would not have a panic attack, that I would get to where ever I was headed safely without issue. It took me a few weeks after the virus to even feel comfortable driving. I was terrified of my own self. And I didn't know why.

I began to ponder and really think to myself, "What is going on?" So many things came up. One being me currently unemployed. I remember feeling so stuck and powerless while at home regaining my strength. There were days where I did not want to leave the house, fearful that I might catch something from the flu ridden streets of the city. I felt like if I had a job to go to after getting better then maybe I wouldn't be so depressed and unsure of everything around me. Instead I was home-bound, anxious to get out but I felt like I didn't know how. I wanted to be reassured, embraced by my sister whom I thought wasn't there for me enough. She would generally be my go to person in a chaos filled frenzy, but her life is different now, so I didn't feel like I could reach out to her. Though her and I discussed my fears and feelings, at the time I was filled with more questions and no guidance to fix my new found panic.

Upon countless back and forth doctor visits and tests done to narrow down what was going on with me my doctor asked, "Are you anxious about something?" I hadn't been asked that by anyone. And I did not know quite how to respond. My doctor's take that the acid reflux I had been experiencing was long gone, but now there's still something bothering me. He asked if I wanted to talk to someone at their office. I agreed. It was interesting that for my thesis I am writing about mental health and the different dynamics that accompany this notion as a Black woman. And here I was, the scared, semi-panicked young woman afraid to voice her thoughts when she almost never held back.

My ability to see all that January was as a lesson and a platform for positive change, took some prepping. I found it so hard to see the bright side that could be. But I did not want to be stuck anymore, fearing everything. Being secure is something I will always want, but being sound and capable is what I know that I need. For my own self-worth and expression.

I can already see something great brewing for myself, my family, friends. My challenge is to stop second guessing, go to bed at a decent hour, keep writing, apply to more jobs, and think of nothing but new. New frame of my identity, new lessons, new beginnings, new love, new power. I am not starting over. I am continuing, sustaining, progressing. I have a burning heart to liftoff and evolve.

Holiday jitters

Twenty-twelve, seems like just yesterday I was watching the Times Square ball drop on television as I welcomed in the new year. Quite often many of us come in with certain goals, expectations and resolutions of how the new year will be different, but of course life mostly has it's own agenda. But that doesn't mean we should stop fighting. Sure, some annoyances in our lives are still occurring, still festering or still hurtful but why give up?

As I tune in to the latest evils of our world on the news, it gets a little harder to remain hopeful. If a man can walk into a school and kill adults and children, what's next? Better yet I don't even want to consider what else someone mentally ill or hateful may be planning. But it does make you consider, what can I do to move beyond the negativity, accomplish goals like our lives depended on it. I realize every day there are certain happenings that I should not just lie down and accept, I can evolve past it. The more I speak dreams and aspirations into existence, the more I begin to believe it will happen. I think that is something many people should try to do more of, SPEAK IT, CLAIM IT, OWN IT like it's already yours!

With Christmas Day approaching a week from today and as my bank account sings a different holiday tune, the nervousness and jitters kicked in. I won't be able to "go all out" like I normally would have. My financial circumstances have changed and buying tons of presents to sit under the tree will be different this year. But I am trying to do my best to purchase at least one gift for my immediate family. If not, it is what it is. I can't allow myself to break the bank any longer. But when I think about it, presents should not be that essential especially with the strain many people are experiencing financially.

Even if you somewhat "have it" to buy, isn't just being around close family and friends enough? As I get older and my "All I Want for Christmas" list becomes shorter and as simple as socks and slippers, why press it? Of course I appreciate any gift, but I am not going to whine about it like I did once as a child at 7 when my mom didn't get me the "My size Barbie" I asked for, :-). But today as a young adult, I just want support, comfort and to be happy.

So as we say adios to 2012, let us try to take a breather, recount on what was to paint an improved what can be. Happy Holidays!

Holidays & Hearts

Tis the season to be...JOLLY, is it? That's right because everyday outside of the holiday spirit we should all try to be a little more happier. I came across a right on the money message from one of my favorite tweeters, Rev Run. He said:

I know I too struggle with balancing what I have control over and what I don't, that is life. But to take extra initiative to be better and rejoicing can be hard, though not as hard as we'd like to make it. It probably takes more energy to be angry or sad than it does to be happy. Think about it, happiness generally doesn't take much effort, it just, is. So in honor of the "holiday spirit" society says we ought to have, let's take a switch on that and allow ourselves an "everyday spirit" where we give more focus on "What's coming" as Rev Run tweeted.

I have three suggestions to get you going to a healthier place this season, despite certain woes (lack of/no money for gifts, relationship issues, job problems, too much schoolwork, not enough pay, good pay but blow money too fast, feeling insecure, frustrated about family) the list can go on, and on, and on, and on....try this:

Sweet Tooth

Regardless if it is Christmastime or not, eat some of your favorite chocolate. A piece or two is good for you. http://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/benefits-of-chocolate

Craft time

Start a small project that you can do after work or any day you have time. Whether it is finally tidying up your closet, decorating your home for the holiday or crafting a special gift for a loved one. Keep your hands busy and your mind off of the "sidebar stuff" I like to call it.

Dance, Dance

A little bit of movement never hurt anyone, low and behold you get a little workout in, a fun one at that. If you own a Wii game console or XBox, whichever system you may have, pop in a dance game and get your body moving! I plan to purchase the latest favorite "Hip Hop Dance Experience" for Wii. I hear it is a blast. You don't have to worry about any judgment or nailing all of the moves, just have fun!

Jumpstart your heart

A lot of times when we as a society think about our health we link food as part of being healthy. While the food we consume is important, so is what we release and interject outside of our bodies. For instance, you could be on the greatest diet, or have an awesome workout routine, but if you aren't taking care of the outer exterior it's almost as if something is missing. What about the clothes that you wear, the company you keep or the bad habits that keep on resurfacing? I find that there are things we can do for ourselves to project a healthier you. Here are a few starting points...

Dress it up

Correct me if I am wrong but dressing up or at least taking better care in your appearance can make you feel more cheerful. On the days when you'd rather wear sweats or a less than colorful outfit, try adding more colors into your wardrobe, get your hair looking halfway decent and you're good. For me, colors like red, yellow, emerald green etc. make me feel better. If black or grays or darker tones are more your style that's fine, but add accessories to heighten your look. Dress yourself up and take on a better attitude.

Recipe for change

This week I created my very own homemade pizza, it was my first time doing that. I had this idea to make a dish that isn't already prepared, such as fast food or a restaurant. With my flattened pizza dough, I added my favorite pizza topping; sausage, plus shredded cheese and tomato sauce and baked my pizza. As the dough raised so did my momentum. The cheese began to melt and I kept a close watch on the oven, not wanting the pizza to burn. In minutes it was ready, it tasted great and I was proud. I am looking forward to making banana bread next!

Giving thanks

Now some may be thinking, "I always give thanks...." or "I am grateful for what I have." But you have to ask yourself, are you only thankful when something good happens? A good friend of mine shared with me about saying aloud the things you are grateful for, no matter how small. You could give yourself a cutoff such as "10 things I am grateful for" and see where this takes you. I have been trying this and to my own surprise I have gone beyond 10. You don't have to be thankful for obvious things like, running water in your home or food on the table for yourself or family, while those are great, think on a smaller scale. This morning I said aloud, "I am grateful for being honest with myself." Try this positive mantra before you get your day going, or while in route to work or just going about your day. It can be a huge stress reliever and even remind you that being thankful doesn't mean just saying it but believing it.

Congrats to ME!

As I sit here looking at this health blog I created I realize that my last post was in June. You can't begin to know how badly I've wanted to write something (as a writer I have ideas constantly!) but I could not bring myself to log-in, I had too much on my mind. At the time of my last post I talked a lot about finding myself again and getting back to what makes me happy. And while I am still somewhat in that frame of mind I have made major progress, there I said it. It is so hard for me to even pat myself on the back sometimes, I think we all should do more of that. So many times we're congratulating someone else on a monumental occasion or happening for them, but what about ourselves? What have YOU done that's great! I am beginning to understand that even small steps and accomplishments that I have made are positive and good for me. In the last few weeks I have battled with accepting all of the greatness that is beginning and I am sure of more that is coming my way. Crazy as it sounds I wrote a note to myself saying that being completely and thoroughly in and out HAPPY scares me. It's not that I've been downright mentally in pain or anything but when things are going right or if I know I am headed in the right direction, it scares me.

How can you be scared of being happy you ask? Well, when various fears and wants are constantly on your brain and low and behold something positive sweeps down and brightens your life, you might think, "Wait huh, is this for me?" For instance, in the last couple of weeks I've published an awesome article about Black ballerinas of the past for Soul Train, finally narrowed down my thesis topic for school, changed my daily schedule into a big deal so that it keeps me busy and sane, plus started and completed TWO sewing projects I assigned to myself. It has been small things, but they're big to me. Just the other day a woman commented on my hair color at a cafe', she told me it looked great on me! Things like that make me smile, totally unexpected things makes me smile like, four little kids that I signaled to cross the street while I was driving today and they said in unison, "Thank you!" THAT made me smile. What I am learning is that my own happiness has been initiated by me. It's not anything someone handed to me or magically granted a wish for me I have begun the transformation because I needed to. So in honor of congratulating myself, here are some of the things I am proud of that have made me smile the last two weeks.

Chef-boy-r-ME

Lately I've been trying to try out more cooking recipes that I come across. I'm not much of a cook, (though I make some delicious pancakes) visiting the kitchen isn't a major strand in my DNA. However like making pancakes when I want something particular I usually attempt to make it. So, I found a recipe for cinnamon-sugar donuts and guess what I made them! I had my ingredients prepared, classic R&B playing in my earphones and viola I completed the quick snack.

I'm just a sewing machine!

I hadn't used my sewing machine since graduating college three years ago, I hadn't had much time prior to now to really focus on making anything. I had been a fabric maverick starting in high school and it carried over to college when I had free time to make a garment or two. This time around I wanted new curtains for my bedroom, I found a beautiful printed fabric with a reddish brown background with gold leaves designed all over the fabric. Within 2 days I sewed my curtain and it now hangs famously against my window. My next project, pajama pants, I'll be finished them by the end of the week!

Published

As I mentioned my article appeared on the website of Soul Train. I was thrilled to see my work, and though I've had a few pieces published at other magazines and newspapers, this piece was special to me. As a dancer I wondered a lot about Black female dancers who have built the foundation for many. There untold stories touched me and I wanted to share it, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to spread a part of dance history to the masses.

Time Quest

Last week I was given a great gift, my thesis advisor acknowledged the progress I am making and she wanted me to begin a more structured schedule for myself. I've never been one to stick to a planner let alone use one. How did I survive college without really using one! I usually depend on my own memory or storing reminders on my cellphone. But that doesn't always work if you forget what your plans were for the day or if the alarm goes off and you hit "dismiss." Now I write out my schedule the night before, I jot down the main tasks that are a priority. I have been writing 2 hours a day and trying to give myself more room to achieve my tasks. And while not every single item since this past Monday has been checked off I still feel impressed by my ability to structure my day better. I can say that by the end of a given dayso far maybe only one or two items went unfinished. Though I cannot worry about that, I just want to stick to a cohesive schedule, and of course have time for me.

What have you done lately that you're proud of? Congratulate yourself, it'll make you feel happy and of course....there's a healthy heart.

Back to Me- (Finding My Happy)

Time to get:
BACK TO ME.
Here I am, unemployed. It is a strange word to me, it makes me think that I am defined in that way by other people. But I know I am so much more. Being unemployed is almost a cause in my opinion, though the effects of the term is something totally different. Just two weeks ago I was let go from my job. Three years ago it was my everything, first job out of college. It transformed into a merged mess and I needed a way out. I was given one, unexpectedly. Now, I am still struggling to find the right words to describe it to friends who don't know and any potential employers who may inquire.

Laid off, let go, dismissed, terminated, given the boot, the heave ho! I don't know what is the proper way to announce being without a job. Jobless. I am beginning to become aware of this, day by day. It is a feeling that sucks. Most days I feel elated to be away from a place that gave me a year-long headache, I can enjoy my summer now. Then the days begin to turn into, "I have no money. This unemployment check may not be enough. How can I pay for this or that." I know that this is a temporary shift, not permanent. Though my mood changes every second of the day. I find myself saying MY job or referring to it as if I am still there. I know the transition and change will take time. I felt that after the first week I was over it. But here at week two I am feeling a bit stuck.

I am glad to be rid of the constant questions of where I was headed at the organization, but now after the storm has me a bit weary and agitated. I really am THRILLED to be out, the job was no longer for me and there was no growth in my future there. But again, here and now I am struggling with what to do next, what am I good at, who will hire me, is it the best fit, is it worth applying? Now I have a new set of constant questions that have consumed my brain. I am trying to take this "time off" to reflect, relax, and re-charge. I need this break I know, though I don't want to get too laxed to the point where the motivation has stopped, my job searching has slowed down, and my day to day routine is engulfed by television and sleep. True, I know myself, I am not quite a lazy person, the success fire within me has been burning for a long time. Now I have been unleashed to spread my talents and go after my dreams. But what has me hesitant? What am I afraid of? I think I have been putting two much pressure on what I should be doing and not enough attention on what makes the most sense and is healthy for me. Two weeks in and I already feel like I should have a job by now, at least an interview!

Note to self: Slow down! Give yourself a little more credit. You need this time to lay low and get back to yourself. Find what makes YOU happy, not what others are doing or the success and new beginnings they are facing. Get back to you, figuring out what makes Elishia smile, what makes her light up. There wasn't a better time to leave the job, it was something that needed to be done. But your calling is just around the corner, change comes in phases, it takes time. However, what you do in that time is up to you. Take it easy, write your thoughts down more, visit places you didn't have the time to see before, read/finish the books you've had on your shelf for months, try your best to save the money you'll get (it's going to be hard), don't write something off that you haven't even begun to start yet, pray daily, get back to your positive affirmations for the day, look in the mirror again without pointing out your flaws, except this change in your own way, not the way everyone else says you should.

Get back to you.

The you that makes others laugh.

The you that tries your hands at things you'd never attempt to try before.

The you that can create magic and galliant words that leap from page to page.

The you that said 6 months ago you wouldn't let a setback define your worth.

The you that lets out a few tears every now and again, telling yourself it is ok to cry.

The you that wants to succeed with every inch of your being.

I want to get back to me, finding my happy. I know that the hunt is going to be a difficult one and the answers will not just fall into my lap. Here I am, starting, not quite starting over, but starting new, fresh, beginning something I've never faced before. A healthier me relies on what I put into my body and what I release into the atmosphere.

My free time now really is space and opportunity, I long to fill it, my way, happily.

From our hearts to yours,
